A key part of successful networking and relationship building is to encourage people to talk about themselves.  You do this by asking appropriate questions to generate conversation without anybody feeling it is forced.

Using one of two types of questions will determine whether a conversation flows easily or whether it is more stilted. “Open” questions give you information and encourage a more open conversation and discussion.   “Closed” questions tend to give “yes” or “no” answers.
